MIT grad student David Merrill demos Siftables — cookie-sized, computerized tiles you can stack and shuffle in your hands. These future-toys can do math, play music, and talk to their friends, too. Is this the next thing in hands-on learning?

When University of Central Florida junior Nicole Nissim got
stumped in trigonometry, she checked out what was showing on YouTube.

Nissim typically scours the video-sharing Web site for clips of
bands and comedy skits. But this time she wasn’t there to procrastinate
on her homework. It turned out YouTube was also full of math videos.

University of Alabama building 3D virtual campus in Internet’s popular Second Life

Imagine a world where people can change the color of their skin or the circumference of their waist, where gravity is just an option. A place where your surroundings are limited only by your creativity. A place where the University of Alabama doesn’t have a football team - yet. Some UA students next spring will begin attending class on a virtual campus being built in Second Life.

St George’s Hospital paramedics train in Second Life - the Guardian

Paramedic students at St George’s Hospital have been using virtual technology to help prepare them for the real life situations they could face when they qualify. The Second Life program is a 3D virtual world where characters can create their own scenarios. The paramedic then arrives on the scene and must assess the situation.

College students always have an iPod within arm’s reach. They spend hours watching videos on YouTube, and send text messages and e-mails at a pace older folks can’t comprehend. Edison State College is saying: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. So, professors are posting video and audio of their lectures on iTunes. Students are videotaping themselves giving speeches, then downloading them to YouTube
