Microsoft Launches Free Collaboration Tools for Researchers

This week, during a summit of researchers in Redmond, Microsoft announced a set of free software tools for helping researchers publish, preserve, and share data. The utilities include an authoring add-in for Word 2007 for capturing document metadata; a Creative Commons add-in for Office 2007; an e-journal service for self-publishing of online-only journals; a research output repository platform; and a collaborative workspace for researchers.

For-Profit Colleges Are Gaining in Popularity in Florida

Jul. 19–They cost more and often get less respect than public universities and community colleges, but corporate-run colleges are finding a growing niche in Florida’s higher education market.

The number of for-profit, degree-granting institutions in Florida has grown from 238 five years ago to 313 this year, according to the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools & Colleges, the schools’ professional organization. Enrollment was about 135,000 in 2006-07, a 23 percent increase over the previous year.

For elearning practice SME is an important pillar to build an effective course. He is one player who can make or break the whole vision. So how do we treat an SME in real life? We give them a special place. We ask them specific stereo type questions. Subconsciously, this fear that s/he may not run away leads to a very formal behavior from our end. Trust me, formal behavior can never be human and warm. Air hostesses/ cabin crew serving at flight are great example of formal and learnt behavior. All of them greet us with same plastic smile and same facial gestures. Does it make us feel warm or have a relationship, binding, or ownership?

NASA Opens Space Image Library

 ”Nasa is to make its huge collection of historic photographs, film and video available to the public for the first time. A partnership with the non-profit Internet Archive will see 21 major Nasa imagery collections merged into a single searchable online resource. The Nasa Images website is expected to go live this week. The content of the site covers all the diverse activities of America’s space programme, including imagery from the Apollo missions, Hubble Space Telescope views of the universe and experimental aircraft past and present.” The site is working already, and it looks fantastic. The site states: “Adult learners may present challenges to higher education instructors who are inexperienced with teaching adults or with planning adult learning experiences. Theories of adult learning take into account differences in students’ life experiences, including education, work, and family responsibilities. Instructors can be more effective in a classroom where adult learners are present when they have an understanding of the variety of ways adults learn, and the different ways they may be helped to learn.”
