Course: EDTEC 540-Solo effort
Purpose:
To create a job aid for teachers to use while conferring with a student about their reading.
Situation:
Teachers often use various notes, stickies and forms to record data during reading conferences. Since many of the documents are vastly different, they often lack cohesion. As a result, I developed a universal reporting form to connect the various techniques. Teachers are now able to share notes and thoughts in a format that all can understand.
Â
What problem(s) or opportunities arose as you were developing this artifact? The opportunity that arose allowed me to collect and filter conferring documentation from different sources. Teachers provided plenty of input about what they would like to see in the form, and I had to streamline the information so that everything could fit onto one page. The main goal of this project was to simplify and unclutter student data folders.
What did you learn from engaging that problem or opportunity, and how do you hope to apply in the future the experience you gained? After the study, two teachers thought it would be helpful to post questions at the top of each form to assist in getting the conversation started. They also requested that I create a space to record the students’ text choices. These two changes are reflected in the revised job aid sheet and will be helpful during our monthly grade level meetings. Not only will we see which reading behaviors need to be addressed, but whether or not the students are experiencing a wide variety of genres during their independent reading time as well.
What does this work demonstrate about you and your capabilities? This work demonstrates my ability to gather data by surveying teachers, interviewing administrators and observing children. I am now able to use this data to create a purposeful job aid.
What did completing this work teach you about yourself within the field of educational technology? This course taught me how to create clearly stated objectives , with product designs that achieve those objectives. I took the knowledge gained from Bob Mager and with the help of Dr. Allison Rossett's book, created a job aid.
